Reverse Mermaid Recap

We did it! We brought Molly Crabapple’s Reverse Mermaid to life during SXSW in Austin, Texas. Burlesque performers Crimson Skye (London) and Sassy De Lure (Seattle) modeled costume sculptures created by artist Aaron Flynn (Austin) and a pink wig by Coco Coquette. Artists at the session had the rare chance to sketch models wearing unique sculptures at the fabulous Swan Dive. Photos of the evening by Nathan Black, John Adams, and Angeliska Polacheck.

The Models:

Amelia Raley (as a Bawdy Bewigged Crabapple character!) was more mobile, and posed for the warm-up sketches.

Sassy De Lure as the Reverse Mermaid

Crimson Skye as the mermaid. Crimson flew all the way from London!

Molly Crabapple, founder of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, was the guest of honor.

Angeliska’s mermaid eyes!

Some amazing drawings emerged from the evening:

Thanks so much! We had a fabulous time!

Reverse Mermaids – March 13th

On March 13th, the Austin branch is proud to welcome the founder of Dr. Sketchy’s, Molly Crabapple, to Texas. To celebrate, Dr. Sketchy’s is hosting a very special drawing session which venerates one of Crabapple’s most powerful illustrations, the Reverse Mermaid. The Reverse Mermaid is a curious creature, oddly beautiful with a fish’s head and shapely human legs.
Burlesque performers Crimson Skye (London) and Sass E Delure (Seattle) will model costume sculptures created by artist Aaron Flynn (Austin). Flynn will be creating two costumes for the event, one for the Mermaid and one for the Reverse Mermaid. Artists at the session will have a rare chance to sketch models wearing unique sculptures at the fabulous Swan Dive venue in Austin.

Take a peek at our video preview of the event! We hope to see you there.

Apophenia Belly Dance recap

In February, we welcomed Apophenia Belly Dance troupe to the stage for a very special Dr. Sketchy’s session. Apophenia is an Art Nouveau inspired troupe, and their costumes and poses took cues from Ziegfield girls from the 1920s – lots of lace, pearls and exquisite head pieces! This was the most costumed sketch session we’ve held to date!

In between poses, we were treated to performances – including candle trays, sword dancing, and general loveliness!

Prizes from Baby Tattoo included paper doll books and  fine art with rubber duckies.

The sketches from this session were so good that Model’s Choice was a very tough decision! The winner got kisses from all three ladies. Awww!!

Thank you, Apophenia! Be sure to check out their shows around Austin.

Branch of the Fortnight

The Austin branch of Dr. Sketchy’s has the honor of being named Branch of the Fortnight by NYC headquarters! This is a true honor, as we are chosen out of the 100+ global branches, and I thank all of you in Austin who have come out to the sessions since I took over the branch in October. We have true rock star potential in this town – let’s make it happen!!

- Amelia

Reverse Mermaids will Exist!

In March two thousand eleven, the Austin branch is proud to welcome the founder of Dr. Sketchy’s, Molly Crabapple to Texas. To celebrate her visit and South By South West panel, we are hosting a very special drawing session which venerates one of her most powerful illustrations, the Reverse Mermaid.
The money from this kickstarter will be used to create the enormous 3D sculpture costumes worn by the models for the March Dr. Sketchy’s session. This money goes directly to the artist as a fund for supplies, creation and labor.
Please help us out by donating today! Our reward offers range from free admission to the March Dr. Sketchy’s session, original sketches by Aaron Flynn, and (even cooler!) original art from the guest of honor, Molly Crabapple!
Please, please continue to donate to this project – we have 2 days left!! Every dollar you donate goes directly to support Austin Dr. Sketchy, which was restarted from scratch in October 2010.
From a budget of zero dollars, we have realized a full rebirth of a branch that has true Rock Star potential. Our Dame Darcy show in January saw 60 people drawing at the session – and only FOUR of them had ever been to a Dr. Sketchy’s before! We are poised to take Austin by storm – but we need your support!
We use the money for the sessions to promote, pay our talented DJ, Shorty Stump (of the White Ghost Shivers) and our MC, Nathan Black and of course, to support very talented models who travel from all over just to model for Dr. Sketchy’s.
Austin Art Monkeys: if you want the branch to thrive and grow, please consider donating today to ensure that Dr. Sketchy’s will be around a year from now! The branch manager (me!) spends countless hours for each session booking models, answering emails, putting up flyers, managing social media, and renting equipment and only pays herself $10 per session. Until we build up the momentum of a bigger audience, we need your support!

Very fondly from the bottom of my big ol’ heart,

Amelia
Austin Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School
Thanks for your continued support of Dr. Sketchy’s, and we hope to see you at a future session!
