What is Dr. Sketchy of Austin?
Tuesday ~ November 11, 2006 by Nathan Black Posted in Announcements
This is the official site for Austin’s chapter of Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School. Dr. Sketchy is an international phenomenon and has been going strong in Austin for three years. We pride ourselves in having the most beautiful girls, most interesting poses/contests/themes and plenty of prizes, alcohol, food, music and networking! Just have a look at our lengthy list and photos of our stunning former models and audiences on our flickr account and you’ll see how we roll. The original Dr. Sketchy’s was started by Molly Crabapple in New York City. Check out their website here Dr. Sketchy’s website. We usually meet once a month on a Sunday from 5-8pm at the United States Art Authority. Our sessions consist of three sets of shorter and longer poses with a variety of costume changes (and burlesque performances). The session is 3 hours long with the first 45 minutes being 2 and 5 minutes poses, the second 45 minutes being 5 and 10 minute poses and the last 45 minutes being approximately two 20 minute poses. We allow all forms of dry media and water based paints but nothing that gives off an order. Also, NO photography. In the past, we’ve had everything from a Tom Waits themed session with a showgirl and her pet bear to angels, roller derby girls, a sexy homage to Norman Rockwell, an onstage “waxing”, a marriage announcement and plenty of cupcakes and shenanigans. In addition, we have music, contests and prizes from local vendors such as Gourdoughs Donuts, Torchys Tacos, Sugar Mamas Cupcakes, The Alamo, The Highball, I Heart Video, Spiderhouse and various tickets to burlesque shows. Participate in our contests and you never know what you might win! Our contests are not necessarily about artistic skill! They are about creativity, humor and having a good time! Anyone can win! We are conveniently located right next to Spiderhouse and we have access to their coffee, full bar and their tasty menu. You get to drink, eat, draw, hear awesome music and meet other artists from a variety of backgrounds. Our audience generally consists of college students, professional animators, fine painters, comic book artists as well as folks who want to practice or just like sketching beautiful women with crayons. We don’t discriminate. We are one big happy family and we want you to join us! This is not some stoic figure drawing group where people don’t interact. We share our work, make new friends and even network professionally. Our sessions are very popular and usually sell out. Our normal audience is 40-50 people and we highly suggest reservations. Cover at Dr. Sketchy is $10 per person and that will hold one chair for you at the session. If you would like to upgrade to a Table, those are $15 for one person. Any additional attendee who would like to sit at a table is welcome but we highly recommend having your own table as the ones available are fairly small. Please bring your own art supplies. You are also welcome to bring easels but please not that you will need to stand behind all of our seated attendees. If you would like to attend a session, please do the following: Send an email to MissD@austinsketchy.com with your full name and a request for a table or chair. Chairs are $10 and Tables are $15. You will receive an email with a confirmation number. You will receive a reservation number if you have a reservation and you will need this number to claim your spot. If you would like to be on our email list and have access to Secret Sketchy Parties (such as SXSW) and preview photos of sessions, please send an email to me at MissD@austinsketchy.com. I’ll invite you to our google group and you will receive the most up to date session info in your inbox. If you have any other questions, please email me at MissD@austinsketchy.com.
